There
are caves in the Lot, that are open to the public. Take a boat ride on an
underground river at the Gouffre de Padirac, or explore the marvels of nature
on foot. The nearby 'Plus Beaux Villages de France' of Autoire, Loubressac
and Carennac exude mediaeval charm overlooking the Dordgone river valley.
In summer, there are local farmers markets selling all kinds of wonderful
foods, fabric and crafts. The day the market comes to town is quite an event
for the local villagers.
Rocamadour is a wonderful day out. After climbing the hundreds of steps (or
take the elevator) to explore the cathedral and chapel of the Black Virgin
perched on the top of a cliff, you can enjoy a fabulous meal at one of the
restaurants below. Shopping is plentiful and if your feet hurt, there is even
a little train that will take you from one end of Rocamadour village to the
other.
In addition to the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France' and Rocamadour, nearby
the Châteaux and fortified castles scatter the Lot countryside, waiting
to be explored. The Lot and Dordogne valleys are perfect for walking and cycling.
Canoeing down the Rivers Lot and Dordogne is available for the more adventurous.
And, of course, you can always learn the gentle art of pottery. For further
